There are materials and activities related to subjects that aren't focused in the weekly assignments below. Students can choose to look at the materials and use some or all of the activities and resources if they'd like. This is not a requirement!

Forces and Simple Machines Unit:

Notes students already have from class: Simple Machine Notes

Compare the 6 simple machines: Comparison Notes

Optional activities:

1. Find an example of each of the 6 simple machines around your house. Draw a picture and describe each of them.

2. Make a Rube Goldberg machine (a contraption that performs a task in a very complicated way). You'll need to start by thinking about what task your machine will carry out (e.g. ring a bell). Try to use as many simple machines in your design as possible. Here's a link to some examples: Simple Rube Goldberg Machines Here's a link to a very complex Rube Goldberg machine: Rube Goldberg Machine by OK Go

3. Show examples of balanced and unbalanced forces at work around your home.

4. Make models of the three different types of levers using materials around your home such as twigs, play dough, pencils, etc. Take a picture or a video of your work.

Op Art:

Optical illusions play tricks on our eyes. Op art is artwork that plays tricks on our eyes.

Here is a piece I made that you can copy at home:

First step The first step is to create two circles. Then, add lines in the circles to create the illusion of the middle of the circle being closer than the outer edges. Then, I added boxes for my background. I did this by spacing lines equally vertically and horizontally. I actually just used the width of my ruler to do it.

Second step Next, you'll pick two colours and alternate the colour of the boxes with them. I started by outlining the boxes with my markers.

Third step Once you carefully outlined your boxes you can colour them in. I used markers since that was what I had at home.

Last step The last step is to trace over your circle lines with black marker. I made an "oops" on my most left circle so I just made my lines thicker to cover it up. I really like how the circles now appear as spheres. Look how the rich, colourful detail in the background added value to the spheres and made them "pop."
